are now registered with easyfundraising.org.uk a
t the following website address: www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/srg.

O
ne of the simplest ways for you to support the group is by using the search engine, easysearch.

So simply put, when you
search the web with easysearch, you raise funds for Swinley Residents' Group.

If you use easysearch instead of Google it could dramatically increase the amount of funds raised.  An average easysearcher can raise around £25 every year and as you make substantially more searches, the potential is fantastic.

To find out how it works, check out the new
EASYFUNDRAISING link.

Published 20 August 2010 and reproduced here with kind permission from wigantoday.net

A RIVERBANK COMMUNITY is protecting one of Wigan’s most important natural assets by taking responsibility for its upkeep.

Swinley Residents’ Group has taken the cause of the borough’s major tributary – the River Douglas – to its heart and has been working with the Council’s Environmental Education Team to keep it looking its best.

Last month the group and council officers made a start along the river walkway from Powell Street to Central Park Way Bridge, near Tesco.

This walkway is a well-used route into Wigan town centre as well as being a gateway to Haigh Country Park.

The team has already started to remove litter and overgrown vegetation and more recently they returned to further landscape and improve the area near to Tesco.

The group has successfully applied to the Big Lottery Fund to help pay for the improvement work.

'In Bloom' Photography Competition                                                              UPDATE: CLOSING DATE 31 JULY 2010

Could you take a bloomin' good photo and snap up a major prize?

Every year, Wigan's borough comes away with a finalists' award at Northwest in Bloom - and that's down to the work of individuals and communities who join in litter picks, design and create stunning landscaping and garden projects, or simply take charge of a planter or hanging basket.

Many of the plants are supplied by Moss Bank Nurseries on Hooten Lane in Leigh, and they have some bloomin' marvellous prizes to give away to Borough Life readers.  Because this summer, it's not just the regional judges who'll be taking a close up view of 'In Bloom' projects - it could be you!

Wigan Council's 'In Bloom' co-ordinator Damian Jenkinson says: "We want your photos of our borough through the seasons.  Not just flowers - landscapes, streets with planters and baskets, wildlife or public art.  Whatever you feel makes our borough clean, green and attractive."

The pictures will be judged by Damian and Wigan Council's media and communications team, with the most eye-catching shots being used to promote 'In Bloom' and the borough.

There are four categories - spring, summer, autumn and winter - and Moss Bank Nurseries have £100 in vouchers to give to each category winner.  And there are £25 vouchers for four runners up as well.

"Email photos in jpeg format to
inbloompictures@wigan.gov.uk" says Damian.  "The photo's file size must be less than 1 megabyte.  If you are one of the winners, we'll contact you for a high quality version; so just send us a copy of your original for now at under 1 megabyte in size.

The closing date for entries is 31 July 2010 and the photos must have been taken in Wigan Borough some time in 2009 or 2010.  A maximum of two shots per entrant will be accepted, each labelled with the season it was taken in.

The judges' decision is final and the winning shots will be used in a future
Borough Life.

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE PROPOSED NEW CONTROLLED PARKING ZONES?               UPDATE: NEW CONTROLLED PARKING ZONES NOW IN PLACE!

Here's your chance to voice your concerns and sign the on-line petition, started by one of our residents ...

Wigan Council are implementing changes to the controlled parking zone W2 in Swinley and Whitley by splitting it into 4 zones. The changes will impose unfair restrictions on residents' free movement around the zones.  Residents will no longer be able to carry out daily tasks such as tending to sick relatives nearby, dropping children off at nursery or schools and visiting local shops - without another permit.  The changes are being imposed without consultation with residents, schools or businesses and could cause more problems than they solve.  For example, 300 parents at Woodfield Primary School will be sharing around 20 spaces.  Wigan Council have been told about the impact of the changes but chosen not to review their decision.

Please say NO to the changes and sign the petition below.  If enough people say NO then Wigan Council must look again at this proposal.
